Baby Registry Checklist | What You Actually Need

Your baby registry checklist should do one thing well: tell you the truth. Most registry guides are sponsored, curated by retailers, or written by people who haven’t been in the newborn fog recently. This one is different. It tells you what you actually need, what is genuinely optional, what to skip entirely, and — most importantly — what to add for yourself as a recovering mother.

The baby registry checklist industry has one problem. Everyone benefits from you buying more. We benefit from you buying the right things.

A newborn’s actual needs are simple. They need to be fed, held, kept warm, kept clean, and kept safe. Everything on a good registry serves one of those five needs — for your baby or for you.

Baby Registry Checklist: Feeding Essentials

For breastfeeding:

  • Wireless nursing bra with one-hand clips — at least two or three
  • Nipple balm applied after every feed from day one
  • Nursing pillow — specifically shaped for nursing position
  • Breast pads, washable or disposable
  • Bottle warmer for pumped milk
  • Bottle sterilizer and steamer
  • Silicone bottle brush, battery-operated

For formula or combination feeding:

  • Four to six bottles — start with slow-flow nipple
  • Sterilizer — essential, not optional
  • Formula dispenser for pre-measuring night feeds in the dark
  • A kettle and bottle warmer

One important note on bottles. Every baby has preferences. Start with one or two styles before buying six of the same. What works for one baby is sometimes completely rejected by another.

Baby Registry Checklist: Sleep Essentials

Newborns sleep between 14 and 17 hours a day — just never in the long stretches you want them to.

Must-haves:

  • A safe sleep space that meets Health Canada standards — crib, bassinet, or bedside sleeper
  • Fitted sheets designed for that specific mattress — two or three
  • A sound machine — one of the highest-impact items on any baby registry checklist
  • A warm dim nightlight
  • Waterproof mattress protector under each fitted sheet
  • Muslin swaddle blankets — versatile enough to use as swaddles, covers, and burp cloths

What to skip:

  • Sleep positioners — not safe
  • Drop-side cribs — illegal in Canada since 2016
  • Elaborate crib mobiles for the newborn stage — babies cannot see them clearly yet

According to Health Canada’s safe sleep guidelines, babies should always sleep alone, on their back, in a safe sleep space with nothing else in the crib.

Baby Registry Checklist: Diapering Zone

You will change approximately 2,500 diapers in the first year. In the first three months alone, a newborn can go through ten to twelve diapers a day. Your diapering setup needs to be fast and organized.

  • Changing pad with a removable, washable cover
  • Unscented baby wipes — fragrance is one of the leading causes of diaper rash
  • Diaper caddy or organizer — one in the nursery, one wherever you spend daytime hours
  • Fragrance-free zinc oxide barrier cream
  • Nose, nail, and ear cleaning set — electric nail file versions are far less terrifying than scissors
  • Diapers in newborn and size one — don’t over-buy newborn size

Skip: specialized diaper pails that require proprietary bags. A regular bin with a lid works perfectly fine and costs nothing ongoing.

Baby Registry Checklist: Bathing and Skin Care

Newborns don’t need bathing every day. Two or three times a week is sufficient.

  • A baby bathtub or bath support
  • Fragrance-free, dye-free baby wash and shampoo
  • Hooded cape towels — the hood keeps baby’s head warm after bathing
  • Silicone bath brush for gentle scalp care
  • Fragrance-free all-over skin ointment

Clothing and Soothing

  • Onesies in newborn and 0-3 months — both short and long sleeve
  • Zip-up footed sleepers — buttons at 3am will test your patience significantly
  • A baby carrier or ring sling — one of the best dual-purpose investments on any baby registry checklist
  • Soft socks with grip
  • A warm outer layer appropriate for Canadian weather

Don’t Forget Yourself: The Postpartum Section of Your Baby Registry Checklist

This is what most registry guides skip entirely. Add these for yourself:

  • Angled peri bottle
  • Cooling witch hazel pads
  • Disposable postpartum underwear
  • Unscented maternity pads
  • Nipple balm
  • A large one-handed water bottle
  • A donut or ring pillow
  • A mama quilt or large throw for the nursing corner
  • Healthy easy snacks registered as a gift basket

These are not indulgences. They are tools for your recovery. They are completely appropriate on a baby registry and most people gifting you will be relieved to have something concrete and practical to choose.
